Our New Shop!

Our Nicola Jane Leeds shop has moved!! But we haven’t moved far, we are now situated 2 doors down from our old shop (Oops and Downes). We have actually swapped shops with Waite & Co Estate Agents who needed bigger offices whilst we needed a smaller shop to focus purely on the Nicola Jane Mastectomy Wear Collection.

We now have a lovely new shop front design as Nicola Jane. You will find us at 97 New Road Side, Horsforth, LS18 4QD. We are open Monday - Saturday 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Firstly, we would like to apologise to any of our customers who have been trying to ring us. BT managed to tranfer our phone line yesterday into our new shop. Our number is still the same (0113 258 7900) and if you leave a message on our answer machine, we will get back to you asap!

Pam, our seamstress has also moved with us and is still here to grant all of your pocketing wishes! If you prefer to wear underwired bras, have bras from before your surgery that still fit you, have non-pocketed swimwear or just about anything that needs pocketing, Pam can do it for you! She also inserts camisoles into bras and alters them if they are the wrong band size or just need the straps adjusting. Feel free to contact us for any further information.

In Leeds, we are very excited to have just received the full Spring/Summer 2012 range of Mastectomy Swimwear! We have lots of colourful new styles perfect for your holiday wardrobe as well as a new chlorine resistant range, ideal for regular swimmers.

As we all change shape and size regularly it is important to check you are wearing the correct size and our team of bra fitters are on hand to give you the advice and expert bra fitting you need.

Bra of the week: We love Barbara!!

The Trulife Barbara bra (2100) is perfect for those of you having difficulty getting a close fit to your chest wall. This bra stays close and secure even when leaning forward which is ideal for V-neck tops. It comes in our largest range of colours Black, Cerise, Chocolate, Navy, Nude, Pink, White and Latte ideal to suit lots of different outfits.

We advise you to go up a cup size with this bra as we have found it fits a little smaller than the cup size our customers would normally wear.

The Barbara bra is also available in an alternative pretty camisole version called Jessica (4019) which is really good for extra confidence when leaning forward or for customers with high scarring.

Congratulations to Annabel and Hello Baby Esme!

Congratulations to our 2011 real-life model Annabel Reynaud who has given birth to a healthy baby girl who she and husband Mark have named Esme. Esme is their second child together.

"I wanted to let you know our miraculous news: Esme Rose Reynaud swam out into the world at 1.20 am on the 4th of Nov. My waters broke at midnight and after a mad rush to get to the birthing centre on time she was born an hour and twenty minutes later. There was just time to fill up the birthing pool but I was lucky enough to have a natural labor and it was very beautiful and calm!

Our little girl came 10 days early and very very fast- she definately couldn't wait to see the world and meet her big brother (who is totally in love with her). Our guardian angel had made everything go right as Mark had been working in Manchester (and was 4 hours away!) but had happened to come home, we had only found the natural birthing centre and registered that morning! and my mum had popped over and randomly decided to stay the night so was there to look after Eddie- so it was all so lucky and amazing in the end!

Esme is very sweet and we are enjoying our first few magical days together and feel blessed. The day after she was born we watched the fireworks together as a family and felt like they were our celebration of life!

I want other young women to know I have gone on to have a baby following breast cancer - I never dreamed this could be possible following that that awful day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. We are so happy"

If I had to choose five things from the Nicola Jane Autumn/Winter Collection. These are the styles I have in every colour which I wear time and time again and are essential to my daily wadrobe.

My favourite is the Nicola Jane seam free padded t-shirt bra which we sell iu three colours White, Black and Nude and I have all of them. This versatile bra gives the perfect fit, with it's seamfree cups and multi-way strap options and works perfectly with my other favourite, Tummy control pants perfect for the festive season. To make myself feel really special I like to moisturise my skin with my organic Lavera body lotion and deodrant which smells lovely and does not contain any nasty chemicals.

To finish my look, I like to wear my Elbeo support tights in barely black, which give a firm support and are perfect to wear during the day and into the night - and when it's time for bed I am never without my Sujenbi Satin nightdress which is pocketed and keeps my prosthesis secure all night.

Nicola Jane Goes Pink For Breast Cancer Care

On Friday 28th October the Nicola Jane team had a pink make over in aid of Breast Cancer Care, raising £30 for the charity.

Amy's Chocolate Cream Cake - Yummy!

Yummy pink homemade cakes and sweets filled the office - we managed to get a couple of photos before the goodies were scoffed! In the Nicola Jane bake off there was stiff competition from Amy's chocolate cream cake, Jakki's fairy cakes, Julita's Lemon cake and our cake expert Anita's bright pink Victoria sponge!

Dressed in pink from head to toe the whole Nicola Jane team made a special effort to dress in pink for the day and the winner’s medal must go to Jakki for best pink lady outfit!

The money that we have rasied goes to Breast Cancer Care which is an independent charity reliant on voluntary donations from individuals and organisations to fund it's vital services.

How money raised helps:

£2 pays for a headscarf set, helping to boost the confidence of a woman who has lost her hair as a result of her breast cancer treatment.

£52 pays for a personal appointment with our HeadStrong service to help women cope with the distress of hair loss as a result of cancer treatment. As well as practical advice and information, women have the chance to try scarves and hats and find something which suits them.

Last night our London Shop Manager Ansuya attended the Ealing Fashion Show held at Ealing Hospital. This event was helping to raise awareness for Breast Cancer with talks from Breakthrough Cancer and Ealing Hospital.

The breast consultant surgeon Miss Shah from Ealing Hospital spoke to the audience, explaining about the work that the Breast Care unit at Ealing Hospital provides to the patients and the importance of being breast aware. She finished by thanking everyone for their support at the event.

The catwalk show celebrated the strength and achievements of 5 women who had all been diagnosed with breast cancer. The models looked amazing modelling a range of Mastectomy bras and Swimwear from our current 2011 Nicola Jane collection.

Breast Cancer Fashion Show 2011

We had an amazing time at The Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Wednesday 5th October. Hosted by Arlene Phillips this wonderful evening helped to raise a staggering £360,000 for Breast Cancer Care.

The glamour of the catwalk saw an exciting mix of designer clothing from Alexander McQueen, Phillip Treacy to popular high street brands from LK Bennett, French Connection and many more.

We were inspired by the true stars of the show - 24 male and female models including chat show host and TV presenter Trisha Goddard. Styled by Hilary Alexander these first time models looked incredible on the catwalk following their Breast Cancer diagnosis.

It is always a great pleasure when we meet our customers, who come from all across the UK and often from Overseas to visit us. Whether the customer is a new or returning lady, we understand the importance of listening, doing our very best to offer products that will meet their needs and requirements. For example we often suggest our tri-leisure forms as an alternative to the silicone breast form which allows a rest from the silicone weight and are amazing for hotter climates and act as a good swim form too.

New customers in particular are often very nervous when they come to visit so it is imperative that we put them at ease straight away. We love making our ladies feel special. We want her to look and feel good; she deserves it!

We generally like to get all our ladies measured whether they are new or regular customers as we appreciate sizing can change. Measuring ensures our ladies that we are fitting them correctly and we like to make any recommendations on styles, fit of bras and prosthesis. We also believe in having a wide choice of products as this is vital to the well-being of our customers and here at the London shop we have different alternatives to the mail order catalogue so it’s always worth a visit!

All members of staff at the London shop have had professional training by Anita Care, Trulife, Triumph and Royce, ensuring we not only fit with confidence on bras and breast forms but also with a personal touch to make us unique from other lingerie fitters. We know our products inside out and will always do our best to find the best product for you, ensuring you leave the shop feeling full of confidence and 100% feminine!

Wendy is our longest running member of staff that has been with us right from the start of when our London shop opened back in 2004. Wendy, who is a former nurse, has had thorough training with Royce, Triumph and Trulife and is a confident prosthesis and bra fitter with a wealth of experience.

Janine has exceptional lingerie fitting practice, trained by Rigby and Peller. She has brought her extensive knowledge of lingerie to Nicola Jane. In addition, Janine knows London very well making fantastic recommendations on places to visit and restaurants to dine and knowing the majority of bus routes for our visiting customers who are new to the City.

Lisa by nature is a caring individual whom will give her customer 200% of herself; nothing is too much for her! Lisa comes with outstanding customer service experience, having been trained at the luxury retailers Harrods and Selridges. She will ensure her ladies are kitted up for all occasions!

I have been the London Shop Manageress for over 4 years now and thoroughly enjoy my role. I respect the customers and will ensure all the ladies I meet have enjoyed their visit to the shop. I am also the London Hospital Liaison so I regularly meet London Breast Care Nurses to make sure they know about our products and fantastic service. I also attend Support Groups in and around London so that people who can’t make it to the shop can benefit from the Nicola Jane experience, see our products and be properly fitted.

Overall, we will always do our best to make your visit to the shop an enjoyable experience so why not pop along and try us for yourself!

Meet Amanda - Our Product Manager

Amanda - Nicola Jane's - Product Manager

Tell us a bit more about yourself – I am 42 and have two children, Holly 13 and Matilda 5. I began working for Nicola Jane in 1991 as a bit of a general dogs body! Since then my role has evolved and I am now the Product Manager for Nicola Jane. My role involves designing and choosing new products for our range. I also write all our literature and am involved in customer service.

How did you find out you had breast cancer? Ironically found out I had breast cancer 4 years ago. Matilda was 6 months old when I discovered a lump. Initially I was not too concerned thinking it was something to do with breast feeding but unfortunately the diagnosis was not so good. I had to have a full mastectomy followed by chemo therapy, zoladex, herceptin, radio therapy and tamoxifen. I feel fine now and try and live my life to be happy and fulfilled.

Why and how long have NJ featured real-life models? We featured our first real life model in 2007 after increasing customer requests who felt it would be helpful to see ladies who are in the same position wearing the products they are ordering. Since 2007 we have featured 20 real life models and our photoshoot day is an event that we all look forward to each year.

We meet first at our London shop so we can all get to know one another and try on all the products for the shoot. We then head off to the studio in Camden. The models are usually a little nervous to start but by the end of the shoot are stripping off and dancing around half naked!!

It is such a fun day with lots of chatting and comparing notes, useful tips and anecdotes and for anyone who has thought about becoming one of our real life models I would whole heartedly recommend it.

Any advice for ladies reading this. Tricky because everyones outlook is different after this life changing diagnosis. I try and live my life to the full, not to let cancer get in way and be happy. If you are not happy, change what is making you unhappy, that would be my advice. Oh, and spend lots of time with the ones you love, take time out and make lots of memories for family and friends

‘On your arrival at our Leeds shop, you will be welcomed by our fully trained bra fitters Cath (Leeds Shop Manageress), Gemma and Susannah. (Photo on the right Susannah, Cath and Gemma) If you are accompanied by a friend or partner they will be invited to take a seat on our comfy sofa! If it is your first visit or you need to check your bra size, you will be invited into a changing room and asked to undress down to your bra to allow us to measure you. There is no need to feel tense or embarrassed as we are used to all different types of breast surgery and we want to help you!
We measure around under the band of the bra and if you’ve had bilateral surgery, we will ask you what cup size you are used to wearing or what cup size you would like to be. If you have had a lumpectomy or a single mastectomy, we measure from the centre of the chest to the centre of the back to ensure we fit the bra to your natural breast.

Measuring is a guide to enable us to find a Mastectomy bra suitable for you we are then able to advise you on the best bra shape and colour if you are looking for a bra for a particular outfit e.g. we have smooth bras for under t-shirts and fitted tops, and nude bras which won’t be seen under any colour of clothing. We also have padded comfy straps if everyday comfort is what you want and bras with cami inserts which fit close to the chest wall which are ideal for wearing underneath v-necked tops.

There is no need to rush trying on the bras as we would prefer you to try as many as you like while you’re in the shop (especially if you’ve travelled a long way) to ensure you get exactly what you came for and leave happy! We can also check your prosthesis for you to make sure it is the correct size and matches your natural breast. We have a range of prosthesis available to buy in the shop. We also have a range of swim prostheses and specialised pocketed swimwear from brands such as Nicola Jane, Anita and Sunflair to ensure total confidence and comfort on holiday or for everyday swimming and within our range are a number of 100% polyester, chlorine-resistant swimsuits.

We stock most products featured in the Nicola Jane catalogue however if you are planning a visit and are interested in a certain item we would recommend that you contact us before your visit so we can arrange this stock for you. We are more than happy to order something for you to either be sent to your address or we can order it to come to the shop for you to try on with no obligation to purchase if it’s not right for you.

If it is your first visit, we will enter your details onto our system so you will start receiving our catalogues through the post and any promotional offers. This also means we will keep a record of what you have bought from us so that when you return we can check your size and purchase history if there was a bra you particularly liked and would like to replace it.

As you have had breast surgery, you will not pay VAT on any of our products - all you need to do is sign a VAT exemption form when you are at the shop.

We can also offer information on local support groups and can provide a pocketing service if you prefer to buy regular non-pocketed bras or swimwear. Our seamstress, Pam, can sew in pockets in any bra/swimwear and can also do alterations if necessary.

We understand that you have been through a lot and are still recovering in come cases. We strive to make your visit a relaxed and pleasant one and will do our utmost to make sure you get what you came for. To us, you are a valued customer and we will not treat you any differently simply because you have had surgery as you may experience in non-specialised lingerie shops.’

Dear Nicola Jane

I had breast cancer three years ago and found swimming an important part of my recovery from surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

My daughter initially found your website and bought me a swimsuit for my birthday so I could get back into the pool a few weeks after my surgery. Fellow members of my lifesaving club and scuba club were very supportive.

This kind of open water swimming has been a new challenge for me, hopefully the blog may inspire other women like myself to venture into the cold water!

After all the training it seemed a good idea to raise some money for breast cancer research at the same time.

This is a photo of me in a NicolaJane swimsuit about to don my wetsuit for the ‘one mile Derwentwater Epic Lake Swim’ along with 250 other open water swimmers.

I had been training hard, particularly during the six weeks prior to the swim, when I was covering over two and a half miles of crawl per week in both pool and open water.

Nicola Jane Team Complete London Moonwalk

Our exhausted but exhilarated Nicola Jane “Black Swan” themed team power walked through the night with 17,000 bra clad women (and men) to complete the 26.2 mile London Moonwalk in a highly respectable 6 hours 25 minutes on Saturday night.

It was a fantastic night with such a positive atmosphere raising vital funds to support research into breast cancer and organisations which provide emotional and physical support for those suffering from cancer now

This year the walkers ages ranged from 14 years to 89 years!

Celebrity Jennifer Saunders walked with the founder of walk the walk charity Nina Barough and gave us encouraging speeches before we all set off.

Nicola Jane Product Manager, Amanda Duquenoy says “The night was dry, thank goodness and lit by an almost full moon. Experiencing the sights and sounds of London in the early hours of the morning is so special, from Big Ben to the beach huts and sandy beach along the Embankment. The firemen of Chelsea also came out to support us and let us use their toilets!! Not forgetting the amazing volunteers who cheer the walkers on from midnight to morning, with a never waning enthusiasm”.

Pockets on both sides:

The majority of our bras are made with pockets on both sides. These styles are absolutely fine to be worn if you have had a left or right mastectomy only. They are also suitable after a partial mastectomy, lumpectomy and reconstructive surgeries. The spare pocket simply folds back into the cup to form a lining. If you prefer a ‘flat back’ pocket you can take up the extra fabric on the side you require by putting a dart in the fabric. Please call us for details on how to do this.

Pockets on left or right only:

These bras can be worn after a full mastectomy only. They feature a ‘flat backed’ style pocket and cannot be worn after a lumpectomy or reconstruction as the pocket sits flat against the chest wall with no excess material.

Nicola Jane on Croatian TV!

On Monday 18th April a TV crew, all the way from Croatia, came to our London shop to do a programme about Nicola Jane Mastectomy Fashion.

There is very little in the way of mastectomy bras and swimwear in Croatia and by chance, the interviewer Ana Vela of Nova TV happened to see our advertisement in the back of Elle magazine when she was visiting the UK to cover London Fashion Week earlier this year. She felt it would be an important and informative issue to cover for her viewers.

We were delighted that she was interested in Nicola Jane, we are always trying to spread the word that we are here, and here was someone willing to help us do that.

Maggie Bone one of our wonderful real life models for 2011 came along and modelled on the day. She was filmed being measured by Ansuya Padhir, our London shop Manager wearing some of our best selling pieces. She looked absolutely stunning and did us proud! Worthing Fashion Show is a Huge Success

A fun evening was enjoyed by a packed Assembly Hall audience at a Charity Fashion Show on 14th April held in Worthing, West Sussex. The event was organised to raise money for the West Sussex Breast Cancer Unit at Worthing Hospital. Although the show mainly featured fashion from local department store Beales, who supported the event whole-heartedly, we also were keen to be involved to help raise fund for the local Breast Unit. As Nicola Jane is based in Chichester, many of our customers are treated at Worthing and our local hospital fall under the same trust.

Fashions from the very casual through to party wear were paraded by the enthusiastic volunteer models, who gave their time and full support to the event. The highlight of the show definitely was when three brave Nicola Jane customers took to the stage modelling their favourite mastectomy bras and swimwear, demonstrating how easy it is to look fantastic after breast surgery.

As there is a Royal Wedding coming up, the finale offered the audience an opportunity to see outfits they may choose to wear, should they have received an invitation to this national event.

The mainly female audience was particularly entertained by the six male models, who received a Chippendale-like reception each time they appeared! It is anticipated that the final donation from the event will be in the region of £4000. Mr. A. Bonomi, Consultant Surgeon at Worthing Breast Unit, thanked everyone for their generosity and promised the money would be well spent for the benefit of breast cancer patients.

A Maggie’s Centre is a place to turn to for help with any of the problems, small or large, associated with cancer.

Under one roof you can access help with information, benefits advice, psychological support both individually and in groups, courses and stress reducing strategies. You don’t have to make an appointment, or be referred and everything on offer is free of charge.

"On a recent trip to Hong Kong I visited the Maggies Cancer Centre at Tuen Mun Hospital in the New Territories.

It was quite a trek getting there but made easier by the fantastic MTR (Mass Transit Railway) system of Hong Kong and well worth the visit.

The centre was a temporary building until they have their super new “architecture of hope” built. Each Maggies Centre is a different innovative structure, beautifully designed and looking like they should be in a Design Gallery! If you have a moment, do check out the other Maggie’s Centres worldwide at http://www.maggiescentres.org/ . They are inspirational architectural designs and well worth a look. They have many in the UK, perhaps one is near you that you can go and visit.

The centre offers a peaceful, friendly, homely place where cancer patients (not only breast cancer sufferers) can meet. They have a kitchen area where patients can cook and make tea, there is a table and chairs to sit around and chat to others, its just like a real kitchen where you feel right at home. There is a quiet room for reading and resources and a room for yoga and other therapies.

It is a wonderful place for patients to have and many come from miles around to visit it. I took some photos of the centre inside and out so you can see just how wonderful even this temporary oasis is for its visitors.

Peter, our Managing Director, is pictured with the Centre Head Helen Lui and the Cancer Support Specialist Gavin Wong. Both of whom made us feel very welcome with a cup of Chinese tea away from the hustle and bustle and heat of Tuen Mun!"

"This is such a comfy and pretty tankini. Although I no longer wear a prosthesis, I think that the pockets would offer real security as it fits very well over the chest. It is cut high under the arms and the adjustable halterneck tie means you can have the neckline where you want it. The Stary night is suitable for a lot of body types as the shape and pattern is really flattering. It is also generous in the sizing and I didn’t feel it was too tight and revealing. The belt is a lovely touch that makes my waist look smaller! It is also nice and high on the back, which my Mum always looks for to cover her scars from a latissimus dorsi reconstruction and the bottoms are high enough on the waist to cover my tummy scars from a DIEP reconstruction. It also dried really quickly after a swim! I’d feel comfortable wearing this anywhere. "

I love that the straps are nice and wide so they don’t cut into my shoulders. The fastening at the back is also cut wide which makes it feel more secure and it is more comfortable under my arms than ordinary bras. MY KEY PIECE FOR 2011 - I love the pink tie-dye Sunflair suit, perhaps because it reminds me of my 80’s roots when tie-dye was all the rage! It is such a great fit, really flattering and with the tunic it makes a really stunning set that I am looking forward to wearing on my holiday this Summer!

My other must have is the Nicola Jane Monet Bikini it is so versatile as you can detach the straps when sunbathing so you don’t get any lines! Nicola Jane Show New Collection at Fashion Show in Aid of Local Breast Care Unit

On 14th April in the Assembly Hall, Worthing, West Sussex a glamorous fashion show is being held to raise funds and awareness for West Sussex Breast Care Unit at Worthing Hospital, part of the Western Sussex NHS trust.

Both men’s and women’s fashion for Summer 2011 will be on display provided by Beales Department Store of Worthing. As well as featuring collections from many of the retailers in Beales the show will also be featuring mastectomy wear specialist’s Nicola Jane, who have a shop locally in Chichester. Nicola Jane will be showing a selection from their swimwear and lingerie collection for 2011 and will be modelled by 3 of their customers who have undergone breast surgery themselves.

After spending a little time in Maria’s company you will soon see she is a caring, beautiful person, outside and in and although she has been through some tough times, she has moved on and come out stronger then ever.

Tell us a bit more about yourself...

I live in Ashford, Kent with my two children, Charlotte and Conor. I have lived here for most of my life apart from a short spell when I moved to Maidstone. This is when I first joined the Police Force and was based in Maidstone to do my training and first post, over 20 years ago. We moved back to Ashford after two years as I really missed being close to my family and friends.

I currently work part time as a Community Liaison Officer. This is a fantastic and rewarding role and being part time has meant I have been lucky enough that whilst the children were growing up I could fit work in around their schooling and spending time with them.

In my spare time I regularly go to the gym. I have to admit this is something I have only recently started doing but I have more spare time now to be able to fit it in. I have given quite a few classes a go such as salacise and pilates but I really do love swimming. Most of all though I love nothing more then a coffee and a chat with my friends! I have found this a great support especially over the past year.

How did you find out you had breast cancer?

In September 2009 my husband found a small pea sized lump in my breast. I went straight to the doctors and within two weeks I had a hospital appointment. They carried out an urgent biopsy and the results were due on 13th October.

Two days before I was due to go back my husband informed me he had been seeing another woman and he was leaving me and the children. We had been going through a tough patch but I didn’t expect this. When we had spoken about the situation before he said he was very stressed and having a ‘mid-life crisis’. He swore there was no-one else involved.

I went to the appointment, already shaken by the recent events. The lump was diagnosed as cancerous and I needed to have a lumpectomy. Unfortunately the lumpectomy revealed there were precancerous cells in situ and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. I needed to have a mastectomy and lymph gland removal, followed by chemo and radiotherapy. I couldn’t believe what was happening, a few weeks previous I thought I had the perfect life. I was shocked by it all and lived the next few months in disbelief.

The mastectomy went ahead that Christmas. My whole world turned upside down. The thought of losing my breast, my hair, my family unit and the support of the one person who I thought would have been there for me, was unbearable at the time. Luckily I have had incredible support from family and friends.

The chemo wasn't a pleasant experience but it is something you just need to get through, there is light at the end of the tunnel which seems a long way off at the start. I tried not to give myself a finish date but you can’t help it. Unfortunately I had my last two chemo sessions delayed due to low white cell count and also needed GCSF injections in my stomach. You learn to cope, I had up and down days with lots of tears on the way, but you do get through it.

Why did you apply to be a Nicola Jane model?

When I first had surgery my confidence had taken a real knock, not just because of the cancer but also separating from my husband. I thought I would never feel the same self esteem I previously had felt in the past. However when I received my first order from Nicola Jane and tried the bras and swimsuit on, I felt fantastic. They were so comfortable and its great peace of mind knowing that everything will stay in place.

I also feel that since going through the past year my attitude has changed from being someone that would be rushing all over the place to someone who wants to grab every opportunity where possible, so when I saw that Nicola Jane were looking for models I decided to cease the moment and apply. My confidence had taken such a knock but I thought this might help me feel better within myself and even more, it would be an amazing way to start my new life.

Any advice for ladies reading this?

It’s a shame that it takes an illness like this to make us think differently about life - I certainly do. Look for the positives in everything, seize opportunities, enjoy what you do, be happy and live life to the full. I do think I am a positive and happy person, however at the moment there isn't a day that passes without me thinking about cancer and how much my life has changed. I am making the most of everything; life is for living, be happy and do whatever makes you feel good.

I would like to thank my family and friends for all their help and support and just being there for me.

In a nutshell...

Maggie is a confident, intelligent and charming lady. She has a fantastic, supportive husband, a lovely daughter and 2 grandchildren and 3 great step children. Maggie’s passion is jazz dancing and she likes nothing more then a weekend away with friends learning new routines or taking part in shows.

Tell us a bit more about yourself...

My Husband and I live in the countryside near Tunbridge Wells with one of my stepdaughters. I have been married twice and I have a beautiful daughter, Samantha from my first marriage. Samantha has two children Dylan and Jack, who I love spending time with.

I have been an IT Manager for an American Bank for over 26 years now. I work with a great team who test banking systems for corporate customers. My everyday work life is demanding and challenging, so I really try to take time to enjoy the simple things in life, such as walking our dog Paddy in wellies (funky wellies though!) We are really lucky where we live, we are tucked away in the countryside but still near enough to London to go to a show at the theatre and enjoy the bustle of city life.

My hobby for the past 8 or 9 years has been jazz dancing and I have met some lovely ladies and made some really good friends as well as keeping fit and having a lot of fun and laughter. I also enjoy reading and playing the piano.

How did you find out you had breast cancer?

I have had breast cancer twice in my life, once at age 37, quite young really, and then at age 59 a routine mammogram picked up a new cancer in the other breast. After a 22 year gap I couldn’t quite believe it had happened again! The first time I managed to avoid radical surgery and had a lumpectomy followed by radiation and tamoxifen. The second time I had the full works -mastectomy, chemotherapy , radiation and now I take Letrazole tablets.

There is no real indication of breast cancer being a family problem – my great grandmother died of it at 53 but no-one else on my mothers side, and one of my father’s sisters in her seventies. However after the second bout of cancer treatment I took a genetic test and I discovered I was positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. Since then my daughter has tested positive and one of my brothers.

How did a mastectomy affect you?

Strangely I feel relieved to have the diagnosis as I now understand why I have had these cancers. Of course I am really very upset that I have passed it on to my daughter Sam and worry that she will get it too. Knowledge is a good thing though and she is being very closely monitored now.

Why did you apply to be a Nicola Jane model?

When I got the Nicola Jane catalogue I really liked the fact they used customers as models. Seeing real ladies like yourself helps you know you can still look good and no one would know you have had surgery and I hope to inspire other ladies to feel better about themselves. Surgery is a terrible blow to your confidence but a pretty bra can make all the difference and make you feel confident again.

Any advice for ladies reading this?

Make the most of your friends and family; I found friends old and new gave tremendous practical and moral support throughout the cancer journey and also very importantly made me laugh. They do say laughter is the best medicine!

I also found having lots of things to look forward to a great help. I would plan lunches and visits with friends, simple thing but things I would look forward to and focus on. Before I was diagnosed I was due to take part in a charity dance show in aid of Demelza House, a children’s hospice. I desperately wanted to still take part in it even though I was going through chemo during the rehearsals and the performance. The staff at the hospital were fantastic and helped me plan my chemo around the rehearsals so I could still be involved.

Aerodance, the dance company, were absolutely brilliant and very supportive – providing me with a fantastic showgirl costume, all pink feathers and fairy lights for my role of Lola in the Copacabana song. It really gave me a sense of purpose and a feeling that I could have a bit of normality and fun in my life at a time when things seemed out of my control. This is one of the reasons I chose to have a feather boa as my prop at the shoot – because I love dancing and because it reminds me of having the strength to get through trying times.

In a nutshell...

At 68 Glory is a fun loving person who has the ability to make you smile. She is full of life and this shines through when you meet her. Glory has two children Debbie and Steven and two grandchildren, Faye, 20 and Bradley, 14.

Tell us a bit more about yourself...

I am from Langdon Hills in Essex, but I grew up in Dagenham. I guess you could say I am the original ‘Made in Dagenham’ girl! I hit my teens in the 60’s so love this era and was an avid mod. I still love hunting out 60’s style clothes in charity shops and car boots and once I found a pair of hardly worn gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choo’s for a bargain price! This is definitely one of my best purchases so far.

I am a trained Nursery Nurse and at 50 I retired from this position but continued working as a Learning Disabilities Nurse for adults in the community. I loved this role and found this particular position very rewarding. You can make such a difference to a person’s day and nothing beats putting a smile on their face. It 63 at decided to finally stop working and completely retire.

Keeping fit is also very important to me. I have always eaten well and exercised regularly. My family are also quite busy so I help out by walking the dogs, it’s a great way to walk 3 miles a day and still enjoy it. As you can see from my pictures in the catalogue I love tap dancing which also another way I keep fit!

How did you find out you had breast cancer?

In July 2009 I had a clear mammogram so in October 2009, when I found a small lump the size of a grape in the nipple area I was pretty confident that it was nothing too serious. But after testing at Basildon Hospital it was confirmed as cancerous and I was referred to have a lumpectomy in December 2009.

Further testing revealed that further surgery was needed to remove remaining cancerous cells. I was convinced that this would be my last lot of surgery but unfortunately more results showed that I would need a full mastectomy to make sure that everything had definitely gone.

The surgeon described it well – it is like when you drop a spoon full of sugar, the sugar goes everywhere and it’s really hard to brush it all up. You have to clean the whole area. I had my third operation in January 2010 followed by radiotherapy.

How did a mastectomy affect you?

The thing I dreaded most was telling my family. I had kept it from them when I first got the results but later that day I saw my daughter Debbie and she knew instantly that something was up. I hated having to tell them it was bad news and then having to tell them two more times that I still wasn’t cured was very painful. On the plus side though I have made my daughter more breast aware and she now regularly checks herself. Shortly after I had my final surgery Debbie did find a lump, thank goodness it was only a cyst but it proves checking yourself is so important.

Why did you apply to be a Nicola Jane model?

I had searched and searched my local area for mastectomy bras but had no luck. I couldn’t believe that places like John Lewis and Debenhams didn’t have anything for me, it seemed crazy! I was quite deflated after this shopping trip so I sat down with my daughter, Debbie, and looked through the catalogues the hospital had given me.

When Debbie saw the models and their stories she thought it would be a great uplift (no pun intended) for me and encouraged me to apply. I never thought I would be chosen but I had such a great day and it has helped me feel normal and confident again.

Any advice for ladies reading this?

Get a good fitting! I didn’t realise before having my fitting, the importance of having the right prosthesis and bra and when I came out of hospital with a softie I felt like this was my lot, I would never look the same again. But since I visited the London shop and was fitted with a prosthesis and 7009 bra I feel like a new woman. My shape and bust line is restored and I feel great.

I would also say that you must always remember you are more then just a boob. I have always been busty and the thing I miss the most is probably my cleavage but although losing a breast is a massive knock to your confidence you have so much more about you.

Meet our 2011 Model Annabel - "Our intrepid explorer”

In a nutshell...

Annabel is a warm, bright, attractive lady who has been married to her husband Mark for the past 5 years and been together for 16. They have a 2 year old son Eddie and live in Walthamstow, London.

Tell us a bit more about yourself...

I have always lived in or around London and grew up in Hertfordshire. Once I had finished school I got a place at the University of London to study History. It was whilst I was at University that I met Mark, in a club in Camden. I was 19 at the time. 16 years on and we have now been happily married for 5 years and have our beautiful son, Eddie, who is nearly three.

I have worked in the charity sector for over 10 years, mainly for disability charities, in various fundraising and marketing management roles.

I have recently started a new post as a Fundraiser for a counselling charity. The organisation provides support for children and adults suffering from emotional and mental health issues on low income, in the deprived borough of Tower Hamlets.

I juggle this part time role with being a mother-a position I love! I love making things with my son, painting, reading , baking and exploring - be it Walthamstow or the world! I have a real passion for travelling. When Eddie was just 9 months old we were lucky enough to go to Hong Kong and Australia, and last year took him to Kenya, a place now very dear to our hearts! He is so chilled out and easier to take on the road! I try to make the most of life and hope to see as much as I can with Mark and Eddie. Other things I enjoy are going to the theatre, cooking,and fashion.

I try to stay fit and enjoy walking and the odd run when I can find time! I have also recently taken part in Denise ( Van Outen) and Fearne's (Cotten) Trek to Peru to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Care. This is a charity dear to my heart, as when I was first diagnosed I was devastated, fearful of the future and my thoughts instantly turned to Eddie. Speaking to Breast Cancer Care really helped me and allowed me to turn this into 'just an illness that I would get through'.

I want to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care so that they can give more women like me help to find that turning point, and hope at a bleak time. So when I heard about the celebrity trek I thought this would be an ideal way to do so! When I found out I had been shortlisted I was really surprised, and I was then filmed for a screen test, so hte process took a few months- I was so excited when I found out I was going!

It was an amazing experience. I went with a great group of people, made some strong friendships and shared some memories which I’ll cherish forever. The physical challenge was really enjoyable - including the camping experience, in such spectacular surroundings (and minus ten conditions!). I loved every minute! The country was beautiful and I will always remember the warmth and generosity of the local people. I feel lucky to have taken part and pleased that we raised so much money (over £150,000) but, most importantly, raised awareness amongst younger women. Early diagnosis is key in survival rates and if one woman gets herself checked early as a result of watching the show, it will all have been worth it.

How did you find out you had breast cancer?

I first started to think something wasn’t quite right when I was breast feeding Eddie. I noticed a lump but when I got it checked I was told it was just blocked milk ducts and nothing to worry about.

But when I stopped breast feeding when Eddie was one and returned to my normal size, a lump was more evident. I went to the doctors who referred me to the hospital for an ultrasound. I felt healthy and well in myself and thought this was just precautionary. The day at the hospital turned out to be the most surreal day…it was the hottest day of the year, beautiful outside, a strange back drop in the first place to finding out you have cancer. As I thought it was just a precautionary check I attended the appointment on my own. During the ultrasound the nurse found something she wasn’t sure about so advised I should have a mammogram.

I had to wait for what seemed like an age in the waiting room but eventually the results came through and I was referred to have an evasive biopsy, the results to which I would get two days later. I walked out of the hospital, stunned and shocked by how the day had turned around. What had started as a lovely sunny normal day had turned out to be one of the hardest days I have been through so far.

The results showed that the tumour was over 10cm so I had no choice but to have a full mastectomy. Eddie was only 17 months old at the time and my main fear was that I wouldn’t see him grow up, I still find it upsetting to think about now.

Mark was amazing through out. He has always been good at making me laugh and this really helped throughout my treatment, it made me feel like things were normal.He wrote me the most beautiful letters, which helped me to focus on our future as a family.

Why did you apply to be a Nicola Jane model?

Since being diagnosed with breast cancer I have been up for new challenges! When I visited the London shop shortly after surgery I noticed that Nicola Jane used customers as models. I think it is important to see real ladies modelling especially after you have had a mastectomy. I really wanted to show younger women who would see the catalogue that they are not alone and you can come through surgery and feel confident enough to model underwear.

Any advice for ladies reading this?

I'm not sure I'm equipped to be handing out advice! However two quotes that have helped me are:

"Promise me you'll always remember: you're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think" - (from a great philosopher- Christopher Robin to Pooh!).

"A ship is safe in harbour, but that is not what a ship is for".

...and I try not to let having had breast cancer hold me back from doing anything!

Breast Cancer Support Group Meetings

This year the Nicola Jane Hospital Liaison Team consisting of Melissa Reeve, Ansuya Padhiar and Linda Newby have been very busy attending support group meetings right across the UK. Linda is based at our Leeds shop and attends meeting mainly in the North of the UK, Ansuya is our London Shop Manager and attends any London and surrounding area groups and Melissa is based at our Mail Order Office in Chichester but has been right across the country, visiting the Pink Ladies Support Group in Guernsey, the West Lothian Breast Cancer Support Group in Livingston and several groups across Wales.

We can attend meetings whether they are in the evening or during the day, and would love to help out at any events you may hold during the year. Bradford Bosom Friends Annual Fashion Show

Our Leeds shop Oops and Downes by Nicola Jane recently attended Bradford Bosom friends 18th annual Fashion show. The evening was held on 26th October at Bradford Grammer School. An audience of around 500 gathered to watch as the models displayed fashions from Nicola Jane's Mastectomy Bra and Mastectomy Swimwear collection alongside other local department stores in Leeds.

All the female models have been affected by Breast Cancer in some way and this event is a great way of showing that it is possible to get over it and get on with life. There were also male models as well as children and these were all members of the ladies families and it was their way of showing support.

The ladies who modelled for us (Carmen, Sheila, Gill, Stephanie, Helen and Marilyn) took part in three scenes, Lingerie, Swimwear and Nightwear. They modelled items from the Nicola Jane Mastectomy Wear collection as well as items from our general collection suitable for ladies who have had reconstructions or a lumpectomy. The models received lots of applause in recognition of their courage to get up there with not a lot on!!

Two special male models were two members of the Bradford Bulls who strutted their stuff and gave us a peek at their pecks and 6-pack!!

This very caring company, which began life in the attic of a house 26 years ago, is now providing invaluable support from women all over the world who have undergone a mastectomy. It has now has three shops – in Chichester, London and Leeds and a thriving mail order business which offers a range of fashionable bras and swimwear as well as prostheses.

Product director Amanda Duquenoy (pictured right) has been with Nicola Jane for 18 years. She started as a ‘general dogsbody’ but her role as evolved as the company has grown, reflecting her flair for design and passion for her work. She also has a very personal interest in the products, as three years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer, shortly after the birth of her daughter.

“It has been quite a frustrating journey, to get the right products,” she says. “Mastectomy wear in the past used to be very matronly – pretty ghastly and quite depressing. Women don’t want to stop wearing pretty feminine things just because they’ve had a mastectomy – if anything it makes them want to wear that kind of thing more”.

“I have always wanted to have fashionable mastectomy wear in out collection so I don’t think being diagnosed with breast cancer myself has changed that, but it did take on a whole new dimension for me. I’m not just designing now for other people – I’m one of those ladies myself. I also have to be aware that our customers range in age from their twenties upwards, so we have to offer a choice of styles which will suit them all. We also now have our own brand of bras and swimwear”.

“I do know exactly what our customers want because I and my customer service team are speaking to them all the time. People come back to us time after time because as well as having a nice, exciting range, we also have such excellent customer service.
We aspire to be first-class and any order that comes in before 4pm is dispatched that day, so the customer receives it next day”.

Amanda and her team are always keen to support breast cancer charities and every year a group of them take part in the Moonwalk – this year they raised £2,611 and the company topped this up to £3,000.

Nicola Jane also supplied bras for all the participants who had had a mastectomy and each October is supports Breast Cancer Care’s awareness month, selling some of the charity’s pink products through its brochure as well as printing useful names and addresses which provide advice and support.

From the mail order premises in Terminus Road, Chichester, products are dispatched to customers to every corner of the UK, Europe the United States, Australia and all over the world. There is also a French side of the business, producing a separate catalogue in French.
“Particularly with the advent of the web, we are now far more accessible to far more people” says Amanda. “Because of this, on our website we have a much bigger selection that it is possible to show in our catalogues”.

“And while mail order is now the largest part of our business, there are a lot of ladies who do prefer to shop face-to-face. Kay, the manager of our shop in Chichester and her team are really lovely and if anyone does have any worries or issues about sizes, they will always be happy to see them”.

Recent surveys reveal that 50% of women are not checking their breasts regularly for signs and symptoms of breast cancer. In response to the ongoing need to encourage breast cancer awareness in women and with a little help from the ever growing technology craze across the globe, Breakthrough Breast Cancer have teamed up with iPhone and released a new app, iBreastCheck, the UK’s first iPhone app designed to encourage women to be breast aware.

The new iPhone application aims to improve understanding of the risk factors associated with the disease and enables women to set a regular reminder to check their breasts. Featuring a breast check video demonstrating how women can check their breasts and the ability to set your own reminders for a breast check and a risk report to assess how your lifestyle could affect your risk of getting breast cancer.

Liz Models Again!

Our wonderful 2008 model Liz Thorne has been back in front of the cameras recently as she took part in Breast Cancer Care’s Annual Fashion Show Wednesday 6th October 2010 at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. On top of this fantastic opportunity Liz has also took part in a 3 hour QVC Breast Cancer Care special ‘Be Aware, Show You Care’ where all proceeds from items brought in the 3 hours would go to Breast Cancer Care.

Liz was a fantastic model for us at Nicola Jane and she put her experience to good use and really shone through at the Fashion Show and also during her TV appearance. Liz is a true star and a great inspiration to young women who have been through breast cancer, showing everyone that there is light at the end of tunnel and what making the most of every day really means.

Liz says ‘Anyone that knows me knows I am not your typical catwalk model, but I try never to say no to any new experience and stepping out onto the catwalk will be a chance to say I’m living life to the full, feeling feminine and happy and having fun after treatment and diagnosis!
I want to show everyone how fabulous I feel! I am determined to show other women that they can get through it. It is a fantastic way to show all my amazing friends and family how great they have made me feel through their support and love and that I am enjoying as much of life as possible!

Being involved in The Show has been an opportunity to meet other people who have been through a similar experience. Amongst the many emotions that come with having breast cancer, feeling isolated and lonely was one of the hardest things to deal with. Breast Cancer Care are there for you every step of the way and I want to show everyone what an amazing and supportive charity they are.

Myself and 24 other exceptional and inspiring models were styled in a range of designer and high street outfits, with our hair transformed by Sassoon Salons and makeup expertly applied by long term supporters Estee Lauder, as we take to the catwalk. Two shows took place, one afternoon and one evening, with the aim of raising at least £500,000 to support the 46,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year.’

All Woman Show - Chichester

On Sunday 12th September 2010 Kay and Jackie from our Chichester Shop team attended the All Woman Show at Fontwell Park, Chichester. Billed as the ‘Ultimate Ladies Day Out’ the day did not disappoint. There were over 100 exhibitors – from fashion, food, home, health, beauty, fitness & more with lots of free demonstrations, presentations and fashion shows. There were even free goodie bags for the first 500 visitors which helped ensure a fantastic turn out. The day also hosted the launch of MacMillan’s Biggest Coffee Morning 2010.

As a local business whos customers are all women, Nicola Jane were invited to attend the day to provide ladies attending with bra fittings and advice and also offer the opportunity to view the latest mastectomy wear collection. Chichester Shop Manager Kay says 'The day was a true success. Everyone loved what was being displayed and we had a fantastic response to our products. Charity Peru Trek for Breast Cancer

One of our lovely real-life models Annabel who will be featuring in our 2011 catalogue has embarked on the challenge of a lifetime. Annabel today begins a challenging trek along the ancient route of the Inca Trail with Denise Van Outen, Fearne Cotton, Amanda Byram, Alexandra Burke and Gabriella Cilmi and five other women all living with breast cancer.

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer in August last year. The news was devastating: a mixture of disbelief, fear, shock and sadness. Eddie was 17 months old and I instantly thought of him, what he would go through, would I be there for him? I just wanted to hold him all the time and every happy moment was shadowed by a pain which is difficult to describe in this short space!

Then I picked up the phone to Breast Cancer Care, who reached through the line and gave me my life back. Just speaking to someone for whom this was business as usual, allowed me to turn this into 'just an illness, that I would beat'. At that stage I thought I had a long battle ahead, but that moment was a turning point for me. I decided I wasn't going to be sad, I wasn't going to let this take over my life.

I want to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care so that they can give more woman like me help to find that turning point, and hope at a bleak time.

And as for the trek, I am really looking forward to the challenge- which includes camping in -6 conditions! Looking forward to marking the anniversary of what has been a tough year, in Peru"

Body Confident at Any Age!

Caroline Presho, 36, lives in Potters Bar, Hertfordshie, with her husband, Conal, 36 and children Jack, six, Rachael, five and two-year-old Toby.

In November 2009 Caroline had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy after finding out she was a carrier of the BRCA2 genetic mutation. This meant Caroline had an 85% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime if left untreated. She had 2 choices: increased monitoring (mammograms or MRIs) or a Prophylactic Bilateral Mastectomy. For her it was an easy choice as with 3 small children to consider she felt that having a mastectomy would take the risk down to 2% and this would remove the stress and worry.

Caroline had surgery followed by reconstructive surgery and came across Nicola Jane when she was looking for soft comfortable bras to use immediately after surgery. She noticed that customers were modeling some of the bras and thought she would apply, to raise awareness of preventive surgery.

Shortly Nicola Jane were then approached by Woman’s Own to see if they had a customer who might be willing to take part in a naked ‘Gok Wan’ style shoot. ‘I instantly thought of Caroline’ says Melissa Reeve, PR Executive at Nicola Jane. ‘We had spoken on the phone and Caroline sounded so up beat and positive I thought she would be ideal for this kind of article.’

The photo shoot was understandably nerve wracking for Caroline who hadn’t done anything like this before, but she took it in her stride and the results are fantastic and inspirational to women in the same position.

Here is Caroline’s story as seen in Woman’s Own magazine:

‘It may sound strange to say that I feel more confident about my body since I had both my boobs removed, but its true. I’d always been quite shy – I never even felt comfortable getting undressed in front of my husband. But since my operation, all that has changed.’

‘Although my mother has fought non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice she has never had a breast cancer scare. But when my father died of lung cancer in June 2007, doctors advised me to go for tests and I discovered I had an 85% chance of developing breast cancer. The only way to protect myself was to have my breasts removed.

I’d already breastfed my three children, and I didn’t feel my boobs defined me as a woman, so the decision was a no brainer.

I had the surgery in November 2009 with an immediate reconstruction, so I stayed a 32B. I was on a ward with patients being treated for cancer and I felt like a bit of a fraud, but I knew I’d done the right thing.

I was poked and prodded so much in hospital there was no way I could be embarrassed about stripping off afterwards. When I looked in the mirror I didn’t see the scars – instead I just saw my lovely new body. Now I can’t stop looking in the mirror and my husband loves my new-found confidence.

My new breasts are less droopy than my old ones, and now I feel they’re as much a part of me as my nose or fingers.’

Bra fitting advice from Nicola Jane

Wearing the correct size bra can be a life changing experience. This might seem a bit over the top but wearing the right bra size and style can make you feel so much more comfortable, improve your posture and define your waist line. With over 80% of women wearing the incorrect size bra, we thought it would be useful to give you a few pointers on what to look for if you think you are wearing the wrong size bra.

Our years of fitting experience also have given us the insight that you don’t always need to dig out a tape measure and pen to get the right size. It is best to gauge your size on how your current bra fits and check the following handy tips:

1.If you wear a prosthesis it is important that the bra is supporting your natural side and you do not gauge the fitting of your bra based on how your prosthesis fits. This will vary if you have lost or put on weight.

2. The band of your bra gives you 80% of the support you need from a bra so it is important to make sure the band fits snugly around the narrowest part of your back, and that it is the same height all the way round. You should be able to run two fingers under the band comfortably.

3. Your breasts should be completely enclosed in the cup with no bulging at the top or sides, or wrinkling of the cup fabric where the cup isn’t completely filled.

4. Always start on the loosest hook. This way you can tighten it up as the bra stretches, giving you more wear.

Reading Support Group Strawberry Tea!

Hello! I am Melissa and I have been part of the Nicola Jane team nearly 6 years. I started back in 2004 as a Customer Service Advisor and also looked after the advertising of Nicola Jane. Over the years my role as grown and developed and now I am Customer Service Manager and also part of our Hospital and Support Group Liaison Team, as well as still being involved in the marketing aspects.

As part of my busy role I am often off around the country attending support groups and visiting hospitals. Today I am off to Reading for the Reading Support Group Annual Strawberry tea. Nicola Jane have been going to this event for many years now, but this is only my second.

When I turn up to the venue I am immediately greeted by friendly faces and I begin to set up my stand, showing our new collection of mastectomy swimwear and bras to the ladies who are attending.

2 o’clock comes and the room is now buzzing with chat and there is lots of interest in our new Collection. There is also a lovely smell of strawberries in the air as the food begins to be put out (temptingly right in front of my stand!!). There are scones with cream and strawberries and ice cream, delicious! Each year the Reading Support Group hold their Strawberry Tea as part of their fund raising and it is always very popular and well attended.

What strikes me about this group is how everyone mingles and chats with each other, there is a great sense of support which you can tell is greatly appreciated by the members. Days like this are what support groups are all about to me, an opportunity to catch up with friends, discuss issues with peers, who understand what you are going through and most of all, have some fun!

This year I saw some familiar faces but also some new ladies, all of which seemed to be having a wonderful time. So if you are newly diagnosed, or even further down the road to recovery, support groups are a fantastic way to not only get information and support but also make some great new friends! Editors Choice - My Favourite Tankini

With the weather being so glorious in the UK there seems little need to go abroad this Summer. I am fortunate enough to live by the sea and the kids and I are always off to the beach after school or at the weekend for a swim (when I am feeling brave enough as it’s still a bit chilly). I therefore live in my swimwear and like to put it through its paces so I can recommend it to you with conviction! In this picture I am wearing the 9167 tankini set. I love the convenience of a tankini, they are very handy if you need the loo of course and on this one the straps are detachable so when I am sunbathing I take them off preventing pesky lines! Obviously when I am cart wheeling I put them back on, but I guess what I am trying to illustrate is how secure the top is. Even when I was upside down my prostheses stayed in place as did the top. This set also comes with a skirt that I always wear from the beach to the car (or bar!) – very handy!

In fact I have just power walked the 26.2 mile London Moonwalk wearing it and I completely forgot I was even wearing a bra, it was so comfortable!

Tell us about product buying and product selection at Nicola Jane Mastectomy Wear. My job has evolved over the 18 years I have worked for Nicola Jane. We started our own Nicola Jane Mastectomy bra and Swimwear range after being disappointed by what was available in the way of great quality, reasonably priced, feminine fashionable mastectomy wear. Every day I would listen to our customers asking for products nobody made – so we decided to take the plunge and do it ourselves! When I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself, 3 years ago, I became even more determined to make sexy, fashionable bras available to mastectomy ladies.

My style - I am obsessed with fashion and always read InStyle and other fashion magazines. I have definitely found that I cannot wear all the clothes I used to and when I’m out shopping I am conscious about only looking for styles with high necklines. This is sometimes a little disappointing but I usually find something I like so it’s not all bad! I love travelling to the Far East as their style is always cut high on the neckline which is perfect for me!

What item should every woman own? You can’t beat a good pair of jeans and a white shirt. Whatever your age, this always looks classy and on trend. I saw a picture of Simon Cowell’s mum wearing jeans and a shirt the other day and she is 80 and looked amazing. A designer handbag is also a must!

Do you have a favourite style decade? Being an 80’s girl I am pleased to see the resurgence of 80’s fashion fusing with the 00’s. Shops like Top Shop and H&M do a great job of supplying fast fashion that changes on a weekly basis to satisfy the style hungry!

My top three feel good essentials?
1, My Betty Barclay PJ’s! I take them with me wherever I am travelling as they wash so well and are a lovely soft lightweight cotton.
2, Coco Mademoiselle – A spritz of this always lifts my spirits
3, A picture of my children (corny but true) guaranteed to make me smile!

My top three Nicola Jane Products
1, I love the 7008 bra set. It is pretty, dainty and feminine. It is also the most comfortable bra.
2, My 4710 Harmony Silk prosthesis – brilliantly light and so natural you literally cannot tell which side is false and which is real!
3, V007 our vest top with a built-in bra – I love the new jade colour which looks great with a tan. It is really nice to be able to wear a thin strap on holiday without a bra strap showing underneath.

1, My iphone upgrade – worth every penny!
2, High leather sandals from Clark’s – so comfy!
3, A black dress from Hong Kong

Where do you shop for presents?
For my kids, H&M, HMV, Waterstones and toy shops
For adults I tend to find most things in my local House of Fraser or online

I am loving Paper Plane’s kitsch range of bags and purses etc.

Best things in life?
My children of course, goes without saying. Walking in the countryside, which I am blessed to be surrounded by. A tidy house! Meeting up with friends and family for a meal and fine wine. Holidays and travelling, which I am lucky enough to do a lot of with my job!

Nicola Jane Team Succesfully Completes the 2010 Moonwalk

Congratulations to the Nicola Jane Moonwalk team who all completed the 26.2 power walking marathon on Saturday 15th May raising over £3000 for walk the walk charity. The Nicola Jane Mastectomy Wear team consisted of Peter, Amanda, Claire-Marie, Melissa, Aimee, Anita and Russell all wearing highly sequinned and fluffy pink bras! The Nicola Jane team were not alone, joined by fifteen thousand women and men in this year’s Playtex Moonwalk. The walk began at 11.00pm and we managed to complete in times ranging from seven hours to eight hours with only a few blisters! The money raised helps to fund breast cancer research and cancer care. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us and made our challenge all the more worthwhile. On 15th May 2010, we will be taking on the challenge of the Playtex MoonWalk to raise money for breast cancer. We are all attempting the Full Moon which is 26.2 miles around London starting at midnight! Walk the Walk is a fantastic grant making charity that helps raise both awareness and grants for campaigns that may not always get the funding they need.

Meet the Nicola Jane Team 2010

Pete Lawrence – Managing Director (Pictured top left)
I started Nicola Jane over 26 years ago with my wife Nikki. Over the years we have grown and moved with the times to become the UK’s leading specialists in mastectomy wear. We have done this by providing the best combination of products from different suppliers, with quality and value for money and a first class customer service.
This is my 4th year of taking part in the moonwalk. Its great to walk around London and being up all night you can see that it’s a city that never sleeps! It is good fun when you see people coming out of clubs at three in the morning, they can’t believe their eyes as they see 1,000 of ladies in bras streaming past them.
Men are definitely in the minority at this event so I get lots of encouragement from all the supporters who like to see a man in a bra! Lastly it’s wonderful to be involved with a night that means so much to everyone taking part and those that benefit from the much needed money and awareness about breast cancer.

Hi my name is Claire-Marie and I’m the General Manager at Nicola Jane. I’ve been working at Nicola Jane for nearly 6 years. My job varies on a daily basis from maintaining our website to taking calls and giving advice to our customers. I love working for a company that offers such a fantastic service and I am continually inspired by our customers.
I am so proud to be taking part in this year’s Moonwalk with my Nicola Jane team mates walking 26.2 miles and raising crucial funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. This will be my fourth time that I have taken part and am so pleased that the money I am helping to raise is going to such an amazing cause.

I love my role at Nicola Jane. As Customer Service Manager I am always speaking to our customers and helping out with enquiries as well as making sure we are always giving a first class customer service. I also meet with Breast Care nurses and attend Support Groups so am always in contact with the people that are directly benefiting from the work that charities such as Walk the Walk provide.
The moonwalk is such an inspiring event and I really enjoy taking part. This will be my second full moon walk (26.2 miles!!) and although I am slightly dreading the inevitable pain and weariness I can’t wait to raise funds and awareness for such a good cause.

My job role is Despatch Manager. I make sure the despatch department runs smoothly and that all orders are despatched on the day that the customers order has been placed. “Walk the Walk is not just about walking, it’s about life”

After successfully completing the Moonwalk in 2009 the Nicola Jane Team are again taking to the streets of London for this year’s 2010 annual Moonwalk. The 2010 team includes our Managing Director Peter Lawrence, Amanda, Claire-Marie, Melissa, Aimee, Anita and her husband Russell who will all be walking the full moonwalk marathon of 26.2 miles!

The theme for this year’s Moonwalk will be ‘Showtime’ ‘Whether it’s the Sound of Music, West Side Story, or Chicago that floats your show boat the Showtime theme of the MoonWalk London 2010 will be sure to bring glitz and glamour to the streets of London.’

The Moonwalk is organised by the breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, and encourages both men and women to complete either the half marathon of 13.5 miles or full marathon 26.2 miles under a moonlit sky. Last year Nicola Jane successfully raised £1660 and in total the charity raised £8,575,404. The money raised goes towards cancer research and helps to raise awareness about breast cancer.

As the real-life models psyched themselves up to reveal their bodies the camaraderie between them was clear for all to see.

Nervous at first, they gradually plucked up the courage to peel back their layers of clothing and strip down to their underwear.

It's the kind of photoshoot that would make even the most body confident of models want to hold in her tummy a little bit but these weren't seasoned professionals.

The women taking part in this shoot were a range of shapes and sizes but all had at least one thing in common - they were all breast cancer survivors and the shoot they were involved in was for mastectomy underwear.

For the past five years Amanda Duquenoy has witnessed the bravery of these women first-hand. Through her work with specialist underwear firm, Nicola Jane, she's spoken to thousands of women who've had mastectomies and reconstructive surgery.

Part of her job has always been to help produce the company's annual catalogue, and when the customers came up with the idea of modelling the bras themselves, it was Amanda who helped organise the photoshoot.

Despite all they'd been through, the shoots were always guaranteed to produce a lot of laughter, and Amanda admired the women for their bravery from afar.

She never imagined that one day she'd be eligible to take part in the shoot herself following her own diagnosis with breast cancer.

'It was pretty ironic,' says Amanda. 'I suppose it just shows breast cancer can affect anybody.'

Amanda's youngest daughter, Matilda, was just six months old when she first discovered a lump in her right breast two years ago. She was quickly referred to hospital and diagnosed with a grade three tumour.

'It was a complete shock. I wasn't expecting it at all,' she says. 'I went to the hospital on my own for a mammogram and they told me I was having a mastectomy. They said whatever happened and whatever it was I would have to have a mastectomy. I thought I'd be in and out in half an hour.'

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed and Amanda was put on the drug Herceptin for a year. Luckily the cancer hadn't spread but Amanda did have to have a single mastectomy.

You might think that going through such an ordeal could have been made all the more difficult by the fact Amanda also had to juggle the demands of a young baby and oldest daughter Holly, now 11.

But she insists that being a mum actually helped keep her going: 'In a way it was quite good because you just have to get on. You still have to get them off to school, it kind of focuses the mind a bit. When they are that young you are completely needed, you aren't left too long to think because there's usually something going on.'

Amanda says she's always been amazed by the strength shown by Nicola Jane customers, who often reveal their stories to her when buying underwear. But she never thought she'd know what it felt like to go through the double trauma of being diagnosed with breast cancer and having a mastectomy

Amanda, who lives with her daughters and partner, Steve Lawrence, in Chichester, says: ‘Thankfully my experience was very quick. I had a mastectomy and hopefully that's it.

‘I've spoken to thousands of women over the years who have had various cancers and experiences. I'm always just amazed that they are so up-beat. You are dealt this huge blow and then you have to just get on with it. You just have to deal with it. Most of our customers are amazing like that.

‘You have to just hope that everything is right. That's hard to do sometimes, you can't help but think what if it comes back, but you have to try and remain positive.'

This year organising the real life catalogue shoot took on a whole new significance for Amanda and she showed her solidarity for the other women by joining them for the day and taking part.

After getting pampered and preened at the Nicola Jane shop on the outskirts of Chichester she pulled on one of the company's pretty vests to take her place in front of the camera.

Explaining the origins of the first real life shoot five years ago she says: ‘It was really down to our customers suggesting that we do it because it's nice to see the bras on real-life models.

‘The shoot is a really great day. In the catalogue we ask people to come forward if they want to be a real life model and lots of ladies send in their photos and information about themselves. Then we sit down and choose our five ladies and go from there really.'

She adds: ‘It's really good fun. They usually start off a little bit apprehensive but by the end of it they are all stripping off and baring all.

‘The team support between them all is just great. Everyone just enjoys the day so much and I think that shows in the photos.

‘Other ladies find it interesting to read about their fellow customers as well.'

Nicola Jane prides itself on helping its customers get back some sense of normality by giving them the chance to wear pretty underwear that will give them the right support
Over the years the company has added more bras, vests and swimwear to its range and Amanda has always had a hand in designing new garments.

Her own experience means she can suggest ways in which the company can make better bras for women who've had a mastectomy or reconstructive surgery.

The 39-year-old says: ‘The range probably has benefited from me having a mastectomy because I've pushed for prettier garments.'

She adds: ‘I always knew that the service we provide was so important in aiding recovery and getting back to life.

‘Of course now I know first-hand the difference that really nice underwear can make.

‘You can't necessarily wear the same types that you used to wear and trying to find suitable underwear isn't always easy.'

Nicola Jane Customers to Model 2010 Collection

We will soon be launching our new Spring/Summer 2010 Collection using five of our customers to model a selection of the new range.

The move follows the phenomenal reception of its first real-life model, Naheed Akbar, in spring 2006 and the continued success since then.

The introduction of models that have had a mastectomy came after Naheed offered to model a Nicola Jane best seller, a strappy fashionable vest top, after asking the London shop manager why the catalogue only used young women to showcase their range (pictured right). The feedback was so successful that this year we will be holding the fourth photo shoot on 24th November 2009 using five women who have all had mastectomies and are customers.

The ‘models’ will be treated to a buffet lunch with champagne at the London shop. They will then be measured and fitted with their favorite bra by trained Nicola Jane staff, and will be photographed at a local studio location in the chosen bras.

The photos will feature in a double page spread in the new catalogue and each lady will be asked to tell their story to help ladies in a similar situation gain confidence after breast surgery.

The 5 ladies taking part are Tina Mezzone from The Wirral, Iris Lucas from Southampton, Suzanne Snow from Reading, Jane Haverson from Suffolk and Beryl Carr from Wokingham.

Amanda Duquenoy, Product Director at Nicola Jane says: “We feel passionately about helping women to regain their confidence and femininity after breast cancer surgery. Using real life models that actually shop with us is, we feel, a powerful way of demonstrating to other women out there who may feel insecure that there is a way of getting back that confidence.”

Nicola Jane Attend Salisbury Annual Lunch

On 14th October this year breast cancer patients met to enjoy each other's company and support as part of the annual lunch for past and present patients, held by Salisbury District Hospital at the Michael Herbert Hall, Wilton.

The pink themed annual lunch was first held 23 years ago so that existing patients could share their experiences and provide additional support to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer, away from the clinical setting of a hospital. The lunch proved to be such a big success that it is still avidly supported each year.

This year saw over 125 ladies turning out to support each other, all dressed in pink. Each lady brought along a raffle price and a plate of food to be shared with the other guests.

Melissa, our Hospital and Support Group Liaison, attended the lunch and exhibited the current collection giving the ladies a chance to view the mastectomy bras, swimwear and vest tops for themselves.

Specialist nurse Shirley Holmes who helped arrange the lunch said: "This is such a positive and cheerful event for new and existing patients with many still coming back since the first lunch in 1986."
